Dirt on the Menu

When I get into a certain subject, I research the heck out of it.

It doesn’t ever matter how weird it is. One time, I wasted a good hour finding out as much as I could about pica. For those of you who don’t know, that’s a disorder where people like to eat things they shouldn’t eat. Like ice.

You know who you are.

But more specifically, I was looking into geophagia, where people eat soil. It probably sounds gross, but I can see where they’re coming from.

After a recent rainfall, everything smells fresh and new. You kind of just want to breath in the smell of the earth. And I’m guessing for people with geophagia, they want to do more than smell. They want to taste the feeling.

After a bit more roaming, it all comes down to mineral deficiency. People feel like they can get more minerals out of dirt than they can get with regular food. And you know what?

That’s okay. We can understand that this doesn’t make them that much different from the rest of us. If you see a child, teenager, or a grown adult trying to sneak in a mouthful of dirt, let’s not be too quick to judge.

We all know you wouldn’t want someone to point out that you still use your order off the kids’ menu at McDonald’s because it’s hard to let go of the happy meal toys.
